The Appaloosa

The Appaloosa is a breed of based on color. The Appaloosa is simply a spotted horse. Named for the Palouse River in Northwestern United States the Appaloosa is thought to be bred by the Nez Perce Indian tribe of the same region. How the original spotted horse was brought to the U.S. originally is open to debate. The horse was all but eradicated when the American Cavalry all but eradicated the Nez Perce Indians in 1877. There are now more than a million registered Appaloosa horses. Because the coloring of the Appaloosa is its primary qualification, there are several body styles found in the breed. There are stock-types, sport horses, pleasure horses, race horses and some that are very nearly ponies. Because of this wide variety, Appaloosas can happily be used for just about anything.
